It's been a long time

It's the last week of classes and I've constantly missing the most important thing: family. Scratch that: breakfast. This morning I ate some chocolate in bed while finishing up my work and had to wait until I had a break on campus to get a burrito. So I have no new photographs...

here's a nice present, though.

Made a bit of time this morning to make something a bit more interesting, though it was helped by ingredients I'd made on previous nights. This is: homemade chili cheddar bread, butter, homemade black bean burger, scrambled eggs (a bit extra, apparently) and Newman's Own Roasted Garlic Salsa. (though speaking of Newman's Own, this is a bummer but not unexpected: http://wcbstv.com/topstories/organic.labeling.cornucopia.2.1660070.html)

Same ol' Raisin Bran, whole milk and French vanilla yogurt, this time with bananas! Because they're going bad!

Meanwhile, Frank was all cute lying on the bed behind me.

Long absence. I'm a bad blogger. In my defense, I've been incredible busy and my breakfasts have been boring. BUT...well, here I am getting back on the horse! Naay naay!

On the left is Raisin Brain and whole milk with a dollop of French vanilla yogurt, on the right, a store-bought toasted biscuit with butter on one half and peanut butter on the other, and behind, a cup of strong black tea and orange juice from the carton.

And beyond those, my two computers, each fulfilling their role. I'm really happy that, if you look closely at the screen on the left, you can see I was studying regression analysis. Serious stuff, ladies and gents, and it requires a serious, high-fiber, no-nonsense breakfast. And a heart mug.

I woke up earlier than planned so thought I'd try something different before hitting the library. I've tried to make poached eggs a few times before and was always left with a soggy, white mess in the pot that looked more like a monotone egg drop soup. I'm always told how simple they are to make- even my roommate, a self-confessed terrible cook, can make them. This morning I was determined to master the poached egg. So, I popped on the new Tallest Man on Earth album, and...

Success! On the fourth egg. As far as I can tell I did nothing differently the fourth time around so I'm convinced it's a matter of luck. Oh well... any advice would be welcome. Served on homemade toast with spinach, grilled tomato, and cracked black pepper with some strong black coffee and orange juice.

A lonely and hungover morning, which I tried to remedy with sweet things: pancakes, strawberry jam, syrup, and lots of butter. Tea and maple milk on the side. Induced a satisfying three hour post-breakfast nap with the windows open.

Bad photo and an aesthetically failed breakfast. An attempt to make egg in the basket, or whatever it's called, with some egg overflow and an unseemly ketchup splatter. Tasted yolky and buttery though so all was well.

To start the sleep-in morning of sickness, a banana with peanut butter.

Then it got cah-razy. I made English muffins!

Puffing up on the griddle.

All of them together, keeping warm in the oven.

Toasted with peanut butter!

And all the while, Miss Frank Zappa Mittens had little sunny kitten dreams about blenders.

Peanut butter on toast with fresh apple juice and black coffee.

4/19/2010

Last breakfast before Jeff left. Baked beans, again, with fried eggs on toast.

4/18/2010

Jeff and I created the mother lode: baked beans, cheddar cumin toast, avocado, and homefries. So much food. We finished. Not even hungover.

4/17/2010

Breakfast burritos with eggs, cheese, salsa and veggie sausage from Verve. I had iced coffee; Jeff had a smoothie.

4/16/2010

Jeff visited! We celebrated with grilled blueberry muffins (made by Jeff), scrambled eggs, and homemade cheddar cumin toast (made by me!). Oh and tea, of course.

Upon returning to Bummerville, I baked spicy cheddar bread (thanks to Eryk's dad, via Laura, for the homegrown chili powder!), then put scrambled eggs and ketchup on top. Orange juice on the side (not pictured...I was a bit out of sorts this morning).

I really recommend the bread. Just used the easy white bread recipe that Ruth sent to me, then grated a ton of cheddar cheese and four tiny scoops of that chili powder into the original mixing bowl.

Even FURTHER behind. But catching up!

4/14/10, I had no camera available to me. But, what was missed was Honey Bunches of Oats with whole milk and a dollop of yogurt.

Above, for 4/15/10, are half of the blueberry muffins I made (using my Ma's recipe) and brought up to Orono with me. The Orono posts, I hope, will appear shortly. (RUTH! That's the cue!)

Been a little behind with posting-- no good in these early days.

Sad times...for reasons unknown, I'm receiving a "lens error" message on my camera, meaning I can't take any pictures because it simply won't open. This post is comin' to you from Bummerville...

BUT, Laura was nice enough to lend me her camera, AND make a blueberry smoothie! Really good.

Then I made the same pancakes from a few days ago, but used this found-in-someone's-garbage pan and they got kinda beat up. Still good though...
Then I copied Ruth and put avocado in an omelet, and added cheddar and mushrooms...and put salsa on top (not pictured). You were right. The salsa does make it a lot better. I owe you a jar.

This is late. I know. It was a busy day, but more importantly, I'm disappointed in this breakfast. It was certainly tasty and an excellent fuel that lasted me a good 5 hours, but as a photo...well...Peanut butter and butter on toasted ciabatta bread that I bought from Au Bon Pain the day before. As you can see, I forgot to take a photo until I was nearly halfway through. Orange juice and to-go gunpowder green tea (not pictured) on the side.

Hungover chocolate-chip pancake breakfast this morning with Kate. We also cleaned the entire kitchen. Nothing like a bout of domesticity to repent for cheap wine the night before.

4/11/10 in Somerville

My eggs weren't happy with me this morning.Honestly, why am I unable to keep all of my yolks together? All three went in intact, and then the middle one halfway through just seemed to think, "I think I've had enough. Pleehh, I broke." Real obnoxious.

Anyway, turned out to be a nice breakfast on what portends to be a long day. Toast with butter, fried eggs with Sam's "sweet spiced pickled beets" (a gift he made for/on my birthday), orange juice, and jasmine black tea. sadf

Oh and what did I drink this morning? Oh yeah...

Avocado and cheddar omelet with homefries and strawberries. Orange juice and lotsa water to drink.

It was great to wake up to half of a minneola (which I've started purchasing since Sam gave me six delicious mini-minneolas for my birthday) on my desk, which I'd intended to eat last night but didn't get around to. But then for my actual breakfast...

I made blueberry pancakes (using this recipe (the first pancake recipe search on Google) http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Good-Old-Fashioned-Pancakes/Detail.aspx as the base), a pot of black tea and orange juice. I shared the extras with Aimee and Pat (Aimee's fake birthday, as we all know, is today) and in exchange they gave me facon, below.

A good morning, despite the stress and being up really early. Cheers!

I planned to wake up early this morning to finish up some homework. I overslept. I didn't have time for breakfast so I ate these leftover Easter chocolates, with a cup of coffee, on the way to the bus-stop. I missed the bus. LIFE.

4/9/10

Two-parter, the first part looking kind of dumb, but it was delicious. I promise. My homemade bread (once again) dipped in olive oil to tide me over while I made my actual breakfast.
Yeah, that picture is included only out of fairness to this blog. Nothing spectacular here.

BUT...

Breakfast sandwich, stacked in this order: grilled bread, provolone cheese, eggs whisked with milk, leftover spicy sweet potato chili, and avocado.

Home fries: white potato, white onion, white mushrooms, paprika (for a little color, finally), and garlic powder, cooked in olive oil.

French vanilla yogurt, orange juice, and a pot of strong black tea on the side.

Fried egg on grilled homemade whole-wheat bread with sugar snap peas on the side. No orange juice either, just water. :)

Honey Bunches of Oats and whole milk, toast (same loaf as yesterday) with way too much butter

All out of orange juice. Only had water. :(

Leftover chocolate-avocado cake that I made for my dad's birthday last night-- inspired, obviously, by Laura. Orange juice and black coffee on the side. Oh and a multivitamin. It was gloomy this morning... hence the lack of natural light.

Scrambled eggs (whisked with whole milk) on top of cheddar and homemade wheat bread, dipped in ketchup. Orange juice on the side.
